I was fortunate enough to survive the narrow hairpin turns and steep inclines on the gravel road leading to Cataloochee Valley. I wasn't very excited that that was also my only way out. So, then began the wait and it was worth it. These guys are majestic. Observing was educational and entertaining.
"Elk were once abundant throughout the United States, but by the mid-1800's, over-hunting and habitat loss wiped out eastern elk herds.
