This herd of the elk in Cataloochee valley, North Carolina caught my attention in many ways. This photo shows what appears to be a younger female trying to get noticed. She is cozying up to the big guy.

Interesting facts: A mature male elk (bull) will average around 700 lbs, a female (cow) averages around 500lbs. An elk at birth weighs around 35lbs. A male's antlers begin to grow in the spring and can grow up to an inch a day. Scientists are studying the rampant cell growth to unlock cures to various forms of cancer. At about 7 yrs, the antlers of a mature bull can weigh 40lbs.
