Siamangs are the largest member of the gibbon family. The most characteristic feature of the siamang is its large inflatable throat sac. According to the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, when the throat sac is inflated it is the size of its head. The sound they make with these throat sacs can be heard 1.2 miles away. The calling can lasts twenty minutes and yet the function of the call is unknown. Siamang do not have tails. They are considered endangered, primarily due to habitat loss.
