Description
In the 1820's St. Marks was an important port for shipping of agricultural products from Florida and South Georgia. In 1828, the then territorial governor expressed the need for a lighthouse. Eleven days later St. Marks was declared an official port of entry. The construction of the original lighthouse began and was completed in 1831. Due to concern over erosion, the lighthouse was torn down and moved further inland in 1842. In 1883 the tower was extended ten feet to bring the focal plane to 82 ft above sea level. The Lighthouse was automated in 1960 and remained an active aid to navigation for vessels on the Apalachee Bay. In October 2013, ownership of the St. Marks Lighthouse was officially transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard to U.S. Fish & Wildlife service. The Coast Guard removed their beacon in 2016 and the St. Marks Lighthouse went dark for the first time since the Civil War. Today it is lit seasonally as a Private Aid to Navigation. The light house has survived the Seminole Indian War, multiple hurricanes, and the Civil War.
