Description
Tuckaleechee Caverns in Townsend, Tennessee was opened to the public in 1954. It is between twenty and thirty million years old and claims the highest rating cavern in the eastern United States. As you can see on the walls, everything looks wet. The humidity in the cave is high.
The Big Room as they call it is more than 400 feet long, 300 feet wide and 150 feet deep. compare this to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky that has a maximum ceiling height of about 120 feet. It also, boasts a 210 foot high double waterfall.
Tuckaleechee Caverns host the most sensitive seismic station on Earth. The US military uses it to detect nuclear testing across the globe. The station is monitored 24-7 and is transmitted via satellite to the DOD, US military, Geneva Switzerland, Vienna Austria, CTBTO and the Pentagon within 300ths of a millisecond.
